Just for fun / Desktop game

Coastline Rush

Our drive from Rhode Island to New York became an arcade game for my kids, inspired by my love of OutRun.

The idea

Why I built it.

OutRun was one of my favorite games. When we were planning our move from Rhode Island back to New York City, I thought it would be fun to turn that drive into a game for my kids. We had made the trip to visit family before, so I wanted places along the way that they might recognize.

The personal version even included our Honda CR-V. I wanted the game to be easy enough for the kids to enjoy, with room for longer drifts and a harder drive when I played. It became a fictional version of the trip, with route choices and a New York finish.

I am not a developer, and getting it to feel right took a lot of playing and fixing. Parts of bridges floated in the air. Grass appeared across the highway. Coming out of a drift could send the car into traffic. Each run gave me something else to work on.

The public version uses original generic cars. It keeps the coastal drive and the choice between racing the clock or taking an untimed run. What started as something for my family is now a game other people can try.
